This “work in progress” of nearly 70 years’ duration (at the time of this writing) captures significant memories, experiences, and images that have defined the author throughout his life:
Growing up in near poverty on a small family farm; attending a rural one-room school with the same teacher (his first mentor) from grades one through eight; coming to terms with his innate homosexuality and trying to reconcile that secret within the dictates of the Catholic religion in which he was raised; continuing to pursue a personal and professional desire to become a teacher, despite undergoing treatment for depression due to his homosexuality, and then going on to educate nearly 50,000 students over 40 years.
And all the while absorbing the arrivals and departures of intriguing people – some famous, some “infamous” in their own way, and many long-term or new-found friends.
This is the story of a naturally born educator who learned to call himself a proud gay American.
